Temperament of Hedgehogs is the major factor in choosing a pet. Usually they are shy and cautious. If the Hedgehog clicks, it tries to threaten you. Jumping and hissing can be the signs of aggression. A good-tempered Hedgehog unrolls after a few seconds. In general, every Hedgehog is different and unique. Some are playful and curious; some are more content to cuddle. Many Hedgehogs like to go for a walk at night, as they are nocturnal animals; so if you don't want to be disturbed, shut the cage carefully. Hedgehogs can take long time to become accustomed to being handled.
Hedgehogs - Social Structure
Hedgehogs prefer to live in dark, cool holes, abandoned by other animals. If no such place is available, Hedgehogs do well in a shallow depression in the ground, or a crag between rocks with a mat of leaves, where they can sleep, hibernate, and raise their youth. African species don't hibernate, but estivate - survive the heat by being in a stupor that is less intense than hibernation. They sleep in their hiding places for about a week and come out sometimes.
Hedgehogs are solitary animals and avoid each other. Only during breeding males and females come together. Males fight each other very rarely. Females raise the young solely. In captivity Hedgehogs don't like to share the cage, so keep them separately.
