Hedgehogs - Grooming
Some Hedgehogs enjoy a bath and swim in deeper water; others struggle and climb out. Even if it swims with pleasure, never leave it unattended; it can poop in the water. Use only baby shampoo. After a bath, trim the Hedgehog's nails. It is usually a two-person operation.

Hedgehogs - Health
Healthy Hedgehogs have bright, clear eyes, a wet, but not running nose, and clean ears. Wheezing is the sight of respiratory illness. Feet should be without sores, and the nails should be trimmed. The animal shouldn't scratch at itself. Poor quill or skin condition could mean mites, poor diet, or other minor problems. Never force your Hedgehogs to hibernate; they may die of hypothermia or starvation. In the wild a Hedgehog can hibernate or estivate only when living conditions are bad. If they are comfortable and well fed, they don't need it.
As for illnesses, Hedgehogs have special health care needs. Most common diseases are obesity, quill loss, mites, tattered ears, and foot injuries, which can be prevented with the help of proper diet, exercise, and care. Several forms of cancer afflict hedgehogs, so it's important to check the animal regularly.
